Duckhorn Vineyards 50-Year Milestone: Key Facts at a Glance

  • Founding Year: 1976, established by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in St. Helena, California.

  • First Vintage: 1978 (producing 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot).

  • The Historical Bet: At a time when Napa Valley focused almost exclusively on Cabernet Sauvignon, Duckhorn championed Merlot as a standalone, world-class luxury varietal rather than a blending grape.

  • Mountain Terroir Innovation (Atlas Peak): Duckhorn incorporates high-elevation mountain vineyards like Atlas Peak (up to 10°F cooler than the valley floor and perched above the fog line). This extended hang-time yields thicker grape skins, deeper briar fruit concentration, and savory wild spice.

Common Duckhorn Vineyards Questions

Question: When did Duckhorn make its first Merlot?

Answer: Duckhorn Vineyards harvested its inaugural vintage in 1978, producing 800 cases of Napa Valley Merlot alongside 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. It was one of the first American wineries to bottle Merlot as a primary luxury varietal.

Question: Why does Duckhorn Vineyards use mountain fruit like Atlas Peak for its Merlot?

Answer: High-elevation vineyards on Atlas Peak sit above the Napa fog layer with cooler peak daytime temperatures. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, imparting structural tannins, wild berry concentration, and earthy complexity that balance plush valley-floor fruit.
